What to expect in relationship counselling.

Counselling for relationships isn’t about blaming or finding a “winner” to your disagreements.

The first step is to identify the issue and then to communicate it to your partner. It is important to be honest and open about your feelings and to be willing to listen to your partner’s perspective.

Counselling can create a safe space for this open communication to happen. A trained counsellor can act as a mediator and neutral help willing to facilitate conversation between those in the relationship.

What are we looking to achieve in relationship counselling?

Relationships take work and it can take time to work through issues. It is important to be willing to compromise and to be willing to make changes if necessary.

It is also important to be aware of your own behavior and to take responsibility for your actions. It is important to be aware of how your behavior affects your partner and to be willing to make changes if necessary.

A counsellor can allow accountability and productive conversation to happen between people in a relationship.

We take a multi-modality approach to relationship counselling.

Our counsellors recognize everyone is different. So we use a combination of therapy approaches suited to the personal:

  • interpersonal Therapy (IPT) - focuses on helping individuals understand and improve their relationships with others, and develop better communication and problem-solving skills.

  • Narrative Therapy - focuses on the narratives people tell about themselves or their relationships, and uses therapeutic strategies to change perceptions or tell new narratives.

  • Cognitive behavioural Therapy (CBT) - focuses on helping individuals identify and challenge anxious thoughts and behaviours, and develop healthier ways of recognizing feelings in the moment.

  • And more
